"It is an agreement that strengthens Italy and Albania's strategic partnership and essentially has three goals: combating human trafficking, preventing irregular migration flows, and welcoming only those who are truly entitled to international protection in Europe. Albania will allow Italy to use certain areas of Albanian territory, namely the port of Shengjin and the area of Gjader, in which Italy will be able to build, at its own expense and under its jurisdiction, two structures to manage entry, temporary reception, asylum processing, and possible repatriation of immigrants." In an interview with Il Messaggero yesterday, Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers, explained the deal with Albania for the handling of migrants. "With the exception of minors, pregnant women, and vulnerable individuals, the agreement applies to migrants rescued at sea. Italy will handle disembarkation and identification procedures in the port of Shengjin, and will set up a first reception center where an initial screening activity will be carried out; in the innermost area of Gjader, a second structure (CPR model) will be built for subsequent procedures. Albania will work with its police forces to ensure the facilities' security and exterior surveillance. The facilities will be able to house up to 3,000 immigrants at the same time in order to complete border processes, which the government has lowered to 28 days. As a result, more than 36,000 immigrants may be moved to Albania within a year."
