The expenses of theft, shortages, damaged items, and administrative errors were €6.7 billion in 2022, in addition to the expenditure on security to protect commodities that retail and major distribution faced. This amounts to around 2% of revenues, and the harm causes a decline in profitability. The costs are then passed on to the buyers, who might pay up to 114 euros per Italian. A slightly rising trend: +2% in comparison to 2020 and +5% in comparison to 2021. €2.1 billion was invested in goods protection measures. This is what the paper "Safety in Retail in Italy 2023" concludes. Supermarkets, hypermarkets, and budget stores are the most affected. Customer theft, employee theft, damaged items, supplier losses, and accounting errors are among the causes. Food items, meat, cheese, and alcoholic beverages, consumer electronics, mobile phone accessories, smart home products (including light bulbs), DIY materials, footwear, and rapid fashion apparel are the most vulnerable products. Fresh and very fresh products are another source of waste and loss: 2% of these products are discarded because they are outdated or unsellable.
