In 2023, Italy has 3.585 million smart working workers, a little increase from 3.570 million in 2022, but a 541% increase over pre-Covid. It is anticipated that there will be 3.65 million by 2024. Remote workers increased in particular in large companies, where they account for more than one in every two workers, or 1.88 million people in 2023; they also increased slightly in SMEs, with 570,000 workers, or 10% of the potential audience, while they continued to fall in micro-enterprises (620,000 workers, or 9% of the total) and public administrations (515,000 employees, or 16%). Almost all big firms (96%) have smart working initiatives, generally based on structured models, and 20% have committed to expanding the application to previously excluded technical and operational profiles. Smart working is also present in 56% of SMEs, where it is frequently implemented using informal models often controlled at the level of specialized teams, and in 61% of public bodies, with formalized initiatives prevalent in larger enterprises in particular.
