No to sex stores and shops selling hemp or derivatives near Sorrento's churches, schools, and meeting areas. The minimum distance is 200 meters. The mayor, Massimo Coppola, made the decision to "ensure the protection of public decorum, morality, and public order." The mayor's proposal is based on the idea that "the opening of commercial establishments such as the so-called 'sex shops' in the area, together with establishments that market hemp products and derivatives to the public may harm the ethics, morals and sensitivity of residents and tourists" . Tourists who are usually in abundance in the famed coast resort, Italians but also foreigners, particularly English, to the point where the term "Sorrentoshire" has been coined. According to the mayor, the potential "repercussions" of the establishment of these commercial activities are not only "of an ethical and moral order": there is also a "disturbance of the sensitivity of citizens residing nearby" the shops, "as well as minors in a fragile age group, which must be protected with regard to psycho-physical development”.
