There are 644 coastal municipalities in Italy with high erosion rates; 54 have seen their length of coast eroded by more than 50% of the total stretch of competence. There are 22 municipalities that exceed 50% to 60% of the coast, 16 between 60% and 70%, 8 between 70% and 80%, and 7 between 80% and 90%. Rotondella is the only municipality in Basilicata with severe erosion throughout the entire coastal stretch. This is the conclusion of the most recent ISPRA, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, 2020 surveys. If the number of municipalities appears to be little in comparison to the total number of 644 coastal municipalities, keep in mind that the percentages indicated apply to the whole coastline of each municipality. Furthermore, the percentages do not indicate a "natural" pattern of coastal dynamics, but rather are downstream of all coastal defense and nourishment operations completed.
