The lab-grown meat bill is law, following yesterday's approval by the Chamber with 159 votes in favor, 53 against and 34 abstentions at the end of a convulsive day, both inside the chamber of Montecitorio and outside. The legislative proposal, born out of a decree signed by ministers Lollobrigida-Schillaci on the strong impetus of a Coldiretti petition, makes Italy the first country in the world to ban the production and sale in Italy of a type of meat obtained from the laboratory cultivation of animal cells. According to the Italian government, the meat does not guarantee the quality, welfare and protection of Italian food and wine culture and tradition. The bill also provides for severe penalties for those who violate the ban, ranging from 10,000 to 60,000 euros.
