Wine and other spirits, cured meats, cheeses, canned tuna and coffee are the products that disappear most from the shelves of supermarkets, hypermarkets and discount stores. This is the finding of the study "Retail Security in Italy" conducted by Crime&Tech, the spin-off of Catholic University, in the period from January 2021 to September 2023. Shoplifting, i.e., the theft of merchandise displayed for sale in retail establishments, is the main cause of external thefts and causes the largest shrinkage, which overall in Retail and GDO companies in Italy averaged 1.38 percent of annual turnover in 2022 with estimated losses of about 4.6 billion euros. The average value of the loot for each case in supermarkets, hypermarkets and discounters is 14 euros and the small "hit" is scored mainly for mid-week shopping (Wednesday or Thursday), while the perpetrators are divided equally between women and men with a slight prevalence of the latter (56 percent). However, it is the already portioned formats or small packages that are the most popular, but the theft of pre-sliced and pre-grated products is also growing. Food theft in supermarkets is favored by the fact that most of the products on display are not protected (very often only the most valuable bottles of wine and sparkling wine to have an anti-theft capsule similar to that of clothing in department stores), although retailers are increasingly turning their attention to the development of new technologies for the security of goods.
