Women own 28% of vineyards and/or cellars in Italy, 24.8% of wine retail operations, and 12.5% of wholesale firms. In total, they oversee 26.5% of the 73,700 Italian wine companies, or 12.3% of industrial wineries, according to a report by CRIBIS, a CRIF group entity that specializes in business intelligence. A more recent survey - Nomisma Wine Monitor - Journey into the Italy of Wine, 2022 - provides a more detailed indication of the presence of women in Italian wine companies: 14% in the vineyard and 14% in the cellar, which corresponds to the female members of Assoenologi. As the wine industry moves closer to the customer, more and more roles are filled by women: 80% of the marketing and communication workers, 51% of the sales crew, and 76% of the wine tourist reception staff are women. Usable Agricultural Area (UAA) managed by women comprises a mere 21% of the overall area, yet it contributes 28% to the agricultural GDP, as reported by Censis. In 2018, the average size of a farm operated by a woman was 11 hectares.
