"The Protocol with Albania does not claim to be a panacea but an additional tool to manage massive migrant arrivals. The agreement signed on November 6 is an important component of an overall strategy. And a possible model, not only for Italy, but also for future collaborations with friendly countries". These were the words of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani during his communications to the Chamber regarding the Italy-Albania Protocol for strengthening cooperation on migration issues. The minister then stressed that no rejection came from the European Union and specified, "There are those in the opposition who feared a violation of international and European law. Those who have described the project as an Italian-style Guantanamo. Those who spoke of deportation or evoked the precedent of the agreement between the United Kingdom and Rwanda. In the face of these gloomy scenarios, it would suffice to mention the simple observation of the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, a prominent member of Swedish Social Democracy: the Protocol between Italy and Albania therefore does not violate Union law".
