Giovanna Iannantuoni, an Italian economist and rector of the University of Milan-Bicocca since 2019, is the new president of Crui, the Conference of Rectors of Italian Universities. This is the first time a woman sits at the head of Crui. Iannantuoni, a full professor of political economy with experience abroad at Rochester University, Madrid and Cambridge, was previously a delegate to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan at the Conference of Rectors. In her inaugural speech at the top of the Crui, Iannantuoni focused on the role of the university in the country's social and civic development. "More than half of our graduates come from families in which they are the first to obtain a degree," she commented. "The university, therefore, remains, quoting President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, a unique opportunity in the medium term to improve the quality of life of Italians, a social elevator that continues to work, but which we must make work better". Iannantuoni succeeds Salvatore Cuzzocrea, former rector of the University of Messina who resigned on October 9.
