After 33 years in prison, Beniamino Zuncheddu, the 58-year-old former herder from Burcei, Cagliari, who was sentenced to life in prison for a triple homicide on January 8, 1991, in the mountains of Sinnai, has been released because he is innocent. Three herders were killed in the ambush and a fourth person was seriously wounded. The Rome Court of Appeals, before which the trial is being reviewed, ordered his release. The turning point came in the last hearing before the Roman judges, when the sole survivor of the massacre recanted the testimony that led to his conviction. After an hour and a half of recounting, at times dramatic, the key-witness admitted: "Before making the identification of the suspects, the police officer conducting the investigation showed me the photo of Beniamino Zuncheddu and told me that he was the culprit in the massacre. That's what happened". The entire Burcei community, starting with the mayor, had moved for Zuncheddu's case, with demonstrations and garrisons in the village and in front of the Cagliari court. Also in the field was the Radical Party, which had promoted several demonstrations, most recently a sit-in in front of the court in Rome during the hearing of the review trial. "An enormous joy, an incredible feeling. Everything is beautiful, something really hard to explain in words," Zuncheddu said as he exited the courthouse.
