Italians spend an average of 462 euros per month for each child living in the family, 15 percent more than a year ago. The costs that affect the most are those related to clothing, school expenses and food. Next on the list of increases are travel, transportation and health. Although on the rise, only 14 percent of Italians cut non-essential expenses dedicated to their children, 36 percent postpone other family purchases, and 32 percent forgo other expenses. Economic motivations affect the choice of having or not having children: among those who do not have children today, 4 out of 10 do not plan to have children in the future. Those who have children and those who do not agree on the need for more economic support from the state to support parenthood (53 percent), while for those who are not yet parents, job stability (55 percent) or support in daycare or babysitting expenses (51 percent) are also key elements in having a child.
