According to a Demopolis survey, just 15 percent of Italians could give a definition of Artificial Intelligence; a third could speak generically about it, while an absolute majority admit they cannot define it. Only 27% say they have used devices that use Artificial Intelligence. Except that, almost all admit to having employed platforms and services based precisely on it: from social networks, to online sales, to voice assistance systems, 12% have interacted directly with Chat Gpt. Italians think that AI applications will have significant impacts on their lives. According to the survey by the institute directed by Pietro Vento, 51% expect it will change the treatment of diseases for the better in the next 10 years. 35% have good expectations for the future of their leisure time. Far more controversial is the prediction about the consequences regarding employment: here, public opinion is split. Conversely, 40% are concerned about the future of democratic participation. The most feared risks concern, in order, loss of jobs, disinformation, violation of privacy, distortion in democratic processes, lack of transparency in decision-making processes, and increase in social inequalities. These fears show a public opinion that ultimately turns out to be anything but uninformed.
