The Malpensa-New York flight, the only connection operated by Ita Airways at the Milan airport, is about to cease. The decision by the company's top management is related to the fact that it is the only loss-making intercontinental route. The stoppage is scheduled to begin next January 7. The cutting of the route between Malpensa and New York is historical in its own way. In fact, it had been since the 1950s that Alitalia served Malpensa airport. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, AZ-operated flights departed and arrived from Terminal 2. About 7,000 passengers are affected by this decision. Two options are provided for all of them: the first is "re-routing" to another Ita flight with a stopover in Rome Fiumicino, and the other is a refund of the full cost of the ticket. Several factors were behind the halt to the direct connection-which in fact strengthens Fiumicino's position from the point of view of international connections - from the fact that the route is in the red to the excessive competition on the Milan-New York route, which also sees the presence of Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, and Neos Air. Another factor that determined the choice was the absence of other Ita flights to Malpensa, particularly "feeder" Airbus A330 to New York, which obviously did not help on the economic sustainability front.
