On Sunday, December 2, about ten thousand people from all over Sicily and Calabria took to the streets of Messina to say no to the Strait Bridge. In addition to cultural and environmental associations, civic committees, there were also politicians, local and national, students and many ordinary citizens demonstrating. According to the protesters, the Strait Bridge project is the wrong, unnecessary and harmful answer to the problems of the South of the country. The government misses no opportunity to emphasize the usefulness of the bridge over the Strait of Messina, presenting it as a green, safe, modern work, an accelerator of development for the entire South, fundamental to improving its transportation networks. Opponents retort that the bridge over the Strait is actually anything but a green work, since it would cause an environmental disaster by devastating a landscape and natural heritage of enormous value and tourist attractiveness such as the Strait. The bridge over the Strait would also be a technical hazard considering the fact that in the world the longest single-span bridge, for the passage of trains, trucks and cars, is 1400 meters, while the one over the Strait of Messina is expected to reach 3300 meters.
