Among pensions, salaries, intermediate consumption, health care and assistance, every year Italy records public spending in excess of €1 trillion. This is stated by the CGIA Studies Office. The most important component is the current part (consisting of the payment of pensions, public employees' salaries, health care, etc.), which affects, net of interest on debt, around 90 percent of total spending. The most costly item is attributable to pensions, which "cost" €317.5 billion. This is followed by outlays attributable to personnel with €188.7 billion, intermediate consumption with €170.8 billion, health care with €134.7 billion and assistance and income support measures with €106.5 billion. This year the cost of repaying the debt amounts to €78.4 billion.
