"On the annual celebration of the Patron Saint Barbara, the national community gathers around the firefighters to renew feelings of gratitude for the service provided every day, with professionalism and humanity." This is the beginning of a message from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, to Renato Franceschelli, the head of the Department of Firefighters, Public Rescue, and Civil Defense. "The calamitous events that have affected large areas of the country have once again seen the National Corps face with determination the new challenges that the impact of climate change and human activity pose to the territories with increasing frequency," the Head of State says. "The women and men of the Fire Corps have generously honored their mission in the demanding rescue operations during the floods and landslides that have hit Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Marche, and other territories, as well as in the emergencies that have arisen, in keeping with the values of solidarity that inspire the Constitution. The nation is aware that it can rely on permanent and voluntary Vigilantes, which are prepared to act swiftly, collaborate effectively with other elements of the civil protection system, and provide a significant contribution even in dramatic international situations, as was the case in the flooded regions of Libya and, with coordination functions, the earthquake-devastated areas of Turkey. The duty of monitoring the territories is critical, particularly in inland and rural areas, and the initiatives advocated by the Fire Corps are valuable in this regard. The Fire Brigade's consistent dedication to risk prevention, the promotion of workplace and infrastructure safety, and the activity of conserving historical and artistic heritage in times of danger and degradation are all major chapters. In this year of commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Via Palestro massacre in Milan, I'd like to dedicate a poignant thought to all the firefighters who, even recently, have lost their lives or been injured while performing their duties. I extend greetings from the Republic and best wishes for a joyful holiday to all members of the Fire Corps and family members who share its lives and concerns".
