"When the Constitution speaks of a Republic founded on work, it does not propose the concept of work as a commodity, but rather of a 'person who works', as a protagonist and, as a citizen, a subject of rights and duties. The person who works is the link between progress and the improvement of one's quality of life." These are the remarks of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, speaking in the Quirinale to commemorate the centenary of the Star of Merit for Work. "Perhaps never before have there been such profound changes, so rapid and with such a great impact even on personal expectations and life projects," said the Head of State, "yet nothing changes the character of work, an expression of human creativity and a measure of each person's contribution to the life of the community. With technological advancement comes the necessity for decision-making and accountability. There is no avoiding the challenge, and there is no avoiding the opportunity to take a step ahead. However, in order to exploit chances for improved community well-being and limit the risks of social fractures, marginalization, and desertification of specific territories, development must be managed with intelligence and clarity of vision".
