After about a month of substantial stability in the number of new weekly cases, the gradual resurgence of COVID-19 circulation has been noted for the past 3 weeks. In fact, from the week of November 2-8 to that of November 23-29, the number of new cases increased from 26,855 to 52,175 (+94.3%). Moreover, the swab positivity rate increased from 13.6% to 18.8%, while the weekly incidence from 46 cases per 100,000 population reached 89 cases per 100,000 population, and the 7-day moving average went from 3,469 cases/day on November 2 to 7,454 cases/day on November 29. Compared with actual viral circulation, the number of infections is largely underestimated because, after the repeal of mandatory isolation for positive individuals, the monitoring system rests largely on a voluntary basis. During the week of November 23-29, the incidence of new cases ranged from 1 case per 100,000 inhabitants in Sicily to 183 in Veneto. Deaths have doubled in the past 4 weeks: from 148 in the week October 26-November 1 to 291 in the week November 23-29, for a total of 881 deaths.
