The Italian school is still divided. Between North and South, between high school and professional education. The current OECD Pisa international study, which examines the levels of competency in Reading, Mathematics, and Science of nearly 700,000 children from 81 countries, highlights the inequalities. In Italy, the North outperforms the South in all three categories, underscoring the country's significant territorial divide. Italy performed similarly to OECD countries in mathematics (471 vs. 472), reading (482 vs. 476), and science (477 vs. 485). However, whereas more than 80% of kids in the North have at least level 2 in math, reading, and science, this ratio reduces to just over 60% in science, 70% in reading, and 55% in mathematics in the South. There are major differences between high school education and technical and professional education, with high schools scoring higher on average in all areas. In vocational schools and vocational training, the proportion of students performing below level 2 in mathematics, reading, and science is more than double that of technical colleges and high schools.
