"Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights being approved by the United Nations General Assembly." Presently, just as it was back then, that document's significance lies in prioritizing the inviolable dignity that is intrinsic to every individual over the exercise of authority. This has enabled the construction of an international architecture founded on the fundamental rights and liberties of all human beings." These are the comments of Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic, on the occasion of World Human Rights Day, which was observed yesterday. "Italy adheres with heartfelt participation to the celebration campaign promoted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in the awareness that this important anniversary is part of a conjuncture characterized by serious and systematic violations of human rights and international humanitarian law that offend the conscience of the women and men of the planet," said the head of state. "The recognition and protection of the supreme values of human dignity, as enshrined in the Constitution, are an unavoidable requirement for the Republic in all places and under all circumstances. Without universal and interdependent human rights, there is no freedom, justice, lasting peace, or sustainable development," Mattarella stated. "In light of the challenges that characterize our time, we have the duty to reaffirm with renewed determination principles that, regardless of political, economic, or cultural contexts, represent a moral obligation for everyone and a safeguard of civilization", Mattarella concluded.
