According to the UBS Billionaire Ambitions Report, now in its ninth edition, in 2023 the number of Italian billionaires increased by 12, for a total of 56 individuals. Over the past five years , Italy has experienced a billionaire population growth rate of 10 percent. In line with the global trend, in the Belpaese, it was the generational shift that fed the ranks of billionaires: with an increase of 59.3 percent compared to that of self-made billionaires standing still at 52 percent. By 2023, total wealth in the country was back on the rise in a major way, increasing 56 percent to $162.3 billion. In the year covered by the UBS study (data as of April 6, 2023), the growth sectors for Italian billionaires were Consumer & Retail, Industrial, and Financial Services. Delving deeper into the portrait of the big wealth holders reveals that 73.2 percent are male and are on average 67 years old. It is projected that, in Italy, $23.1 billion will be transferred in the next 20-30 years to the next generation.
