After years of speculation, the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security has disclosed the locations for the national radioactive waste depository. There are 51 locations spread across six regions: 21 in Lazio (all in the province of Viterbo), 10 in Basilicata, 8 in Sardinia, five in Piedmont (all in the province of Alessandria), four in territories between Basilicata and Puglia, two in Sicily in the province of Trapani, and one in Puglia in the province of Bari. Following the announcement of the 51 areas judged appropriate, debate and stances erupted almost immediately. "Sardinia has already expressed itself with a no," stated Christian Solinas, president of Sardinia. "The Basilicata Region reiterates the Lucanian territory's no to radioactive waste sites," says Cosimo Latronico, regional councillor for the environment. "Trapani firmly reiterates its refusal to host nuclear waste," says Mayor Giacomo Tranchida. A 'no' comes also from the mayor of Altamura (Bari) and the mayors of the five towns in the Alessandria region. There is now hope for municipalities that are not on the list but are interested in the federal incentives.
