Senator Matteo Renzi's income is growing: in the 2023 tax return (referring to the 2022 tax year) that parliamentarians are required to submit, the former prime minister and leader of the centrist Italia Viva party stands out with a total income of 3.217 million euros, an increase of about 600 thousand euros compared to the previous year, making him the wealthiest parliamentarian at the moment. This is still a partial ranking because two heavyweights are absent from the list: Antonio Angelucci, a deputy elected with the League and publisher (4.581 million euros in 2022), and Giulia Bongiorno, a senator of Fratelli d'Italia and lawyer (nearly 3 million euros in 2022). Renzi outperforms Renzo Piano, the Genoese architect and senator for life, who earns close to 3 million euros between French (2.512 million) and Italian (389 thousand euros) declarations (more than half of the 6.36 million disclosed the previous year). Giulio Tremonti, on the other side, sees an increase: the former Economy Minister in the Berlusconi governments and currently a Fratelli d'Italia deputy rises from 1.588 to 2.594 million (+38%). Tremonti therefore detaches Cristina Rossello, Berlusconi's former lawyer and Forza Italia member, who was the wealthiest deputy in Montecitorio last year with 2.107 million, a figure considerably reaffirmed in the 2023 statement (2.054 million). The richest parliamentarian in 2022 will be absent: Silvio Berlusconi (who died on June 12, 2023) claimed 17.698 million. An astounding figure, but hardly a record for the Forza Italia founder, who has long been the political King Midas: in 2019, he reported over 48 million.
