The extent to which the Privacy Guarantor has implemented measures to prevent the unauthorized distribution of sexually explicit images or videos via digital platforms has increased by more than fivefold. This is particularly evident in cases involving sextortion, which is primarily motivated by financial gain, and revenge porn crimes, which are motivated by vengeance. There were 264 interventions in the first eleven months of this year, compared to 51 in the entire year of 2022, and victim reports more than tripled. Additionally, the postal authorities are dealing with a growing number of cases that have occurred after the crime has been reported. Sextortion, in particular, has increased by 29% in the first eleven months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. On the other side, there was a minor increase in revenge porn: there were 259 cases treated to November, compared to 245 in 2022. The increase is primarily due to an increase in male victims, who now account for 29% of all victims, up from 21-22% in prior years. Revenge porn, or the unauthorized distribution of photographs or movies for vengeance (typically by ex-partners), but often for envy or rivalry, is still a crime primarily committed against women. Sextortion, on the other hand, where money or other items are demanded in exchange for not spreading sexual content, primarily affects men.
