58.7 percent of the foreign population surveyed in the latest ISTAT survey (about 3 million) live in northern Italy. In particular, the Northwest, with more than a third of the foreign citizens surveyed, is the area with the largest presence of foreigners. The Center (about 1 million 267 thousand) hosts almost 25.0 percent of foreigners, and the South and Islands 11.9 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively. The incidence on the total resident population is around 11% for the North and the Center and far below the national average (8.7%) for the South and the Islands (4.5% and 3.8%, respectively).
