"You operate with the responsibility to manifest in a concrete way Italy's vocation to act for an international community at peace, stable and prosperous. Yours is a valuable commitment and I express to you the Republic's gratitude". These are the words of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella at the 16th Conference of Italian Ambassadors held yesterday morning at the Farnesina. An opportunity to talk about war, peace, crisis and Europe, "To claim that we are living in ordinary times would be to deny the evidence," the Head of State stressed. "The challenges facing humanity place the survival of the planet at risk, starting with the consequences of the climate condition, all the way to modes of warfare - which take us back to eras and conditions that have no right to recur - in which peoples become hostages to the aggressive policies of their respective governments," Mattarella said in his speech. "Deriving the Russian Federation's attack on Ukraine to a mere regional dimension would be a capital mistake. Its destabilizing effects are being felt in all corners of the globe, and it is vulnerably affecting international instruments of cooperation and dialogue," the president stressed. Mattarella referred not only to the war in Ukraine but also to what is happening in the Middle East. "In the Middle East, the Hamas terrorist movement has triggered spirals of violence of immense proportions, even succeeding in its intent to sabotage, by freezing it in the short terme, any attempt at dialogue. The barbaric murder of hundreds of unarmed Israeli citizens has restarted an atypical war between the State of Israel and a terrorist formation that effectively controls a territory, with civilians, whether Israeli or Palestinian, called upon to tragically pay the highest price. Terrorism advances where the political proposal loses ground, or patient efforts at weaving diplomatic solutions remain frustrated, despite the passage of decades. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict - according to Mattarella - is undeniably the result of the prolonged inability to build such paths of dialogue and coexistence, and to pursue the only reasonable path: the two-state solution”.
