Southwest Airlines has chosen Leonardo's technology to redefine the transit area baggage handling system at Denver International Airport. This initiative will ensure the handling of a significant number of flights and faster connection times; at the same time, the capacity to cope with the hub's growing passenger volume will be enhanced. Denver handled more than 69 million passengers in 2022 and ranks third among the world's 10 busiest airports. The contract, worth more than 25 million euros, includes a custom-developed solution for Southwest to better manage operational, manual sorting and baggage transfer activities. The most important aspect of the project is the introduction of the "cross-belt" baggage sorting system, which is a real technological innovation in the United States. Leonardo's cross-belt sorter (MBHS - Multisorting Baggage Handling System) is, in fact, a proven and reliable technology that offers a number of advantages over traditional systems, including maximum accuracy, higher sorting speed and scalability. These features will help Southwest gain operational efficiency, accuracy in automated baggage handling in transit, and reduce operator workload.
