So far 153,407 migrants have landed on Italian shores since the beginning of the year. In the same period last year there were 99,167, while in 2021 there were 63,876. The figure was released by the Ministry of the Interior. Of the more than 153,000 migrants landed in Italy in 2023, 18,204 are of Guinean nationality (12 percent), based on what was declared at the time of landing; the others come from Tunisia (17,156, 11 percent), Ivory Coast (16,004, 10 percent), Bangladesh (12. 122, 8%), Egypt (11,066, 7%), Syria (9,503, 6%), Burkina Faso (8,412, 6%), Pakistan (7,642, 5%), Mali (5,904, 4%), Sudan (5,830, 4%) to which must be added 41,778 people (27%) from other states or for whom the identification process is still underway. To date, 17,273 unaccompanied foreign minors have reached Italy by sea. The figure is updated as of December 18. Over the past decade, the central Mediterranean has been the scene of continuous shipwrecks and accidents that have caused a total of at least 22,300 deaths. In 2023 alone, the number of missing persons was two thousand, including 289 minors, about eleven every week. This is what the IOM, International Organization for Migration, highlighted.
