In 2022, the production of Italian bicycles and related components reached a value of 1.9 billion euros, up 10 percent from 2021. The expansion will continue in 2023, which is expected to close at 2.1 billion euros. The Italian bicycle industry is strongly rooted in the northern regions in which most of the companies producing bicycles and components and almost all of the total sales are concentrated. By tradition and land conformation, the regions of the Po Valley are those where bicycles are most used and where the greatest number of bicycle paths are available. For this reason, in addition to a concentration of companies operating in the sector, there is also a strong presence of historical and excellent companies, which reach the highest levels of turnover. Leading the way in terms of turnover, with 224 million euros a year, is a Veneto-based excellence in components, Vicenza-based Selle Royal. Founded in 1956 by Riccardo Bigolin, it has been producing saddles that combine design and innovation for more than 60 years and is one of the leading names in the industry internationally. Further back is Manifattura Valcismon of Fonzaso, in the province of Belluno, from over 134 million euros in sales, another Veneto-based group specializing in technical and cycling apparel. With 118 million euros in turnover, in third place, the top bicycle manufacturer, beyond then components, is Denver of Dronero, in the province of Cuneo. Founded 1996, it makes up to 4,000 bicycles a day.
