Ambulances in Lombardy are becoming inclusive for deaf people. In fact, they can now video-link to an interpreting service with a sign language (LIS) expert to help deaf citizens who find themselves in a medical emergency situation explain themselves to the caregivers assisting them. The project, which is called "Lombardia LIS”, is also available aboard medical cars, nursing cars and helicopters. The service works through a QR code, through which one can connect - within 60 seconds - to the interpreter operator. The initiative is free for all hearing-impaired citizens, and is active both in "emergency" mode with immediate connection and by reservation. "Lombardy LIS" can also be used to interact with the Local Health Unit (CUP) counter, at blood collection or vaccination centers, and also during specialist visits, as well as in dealings with social and social-health workers.
