"Italy honors the memory of Piersanti Mattarella, killed by the Mafia on January 6, 1980 in Palermo. He is one of the many heroes whose courage and integrity taught the Italian people that it is possible to fight organized crime and take care of public affairs without giving in to the stench of moral compromise. Forty-four years have passed since his sacrifice, but time has not in the least affected the strength of Piersanti Mattarella's example. Also in his name we will continue our daily commitment to free, once and for all, our homeland from the Mafia cancer". With these words, last January 6, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recalled Piersanti Mattarella, brother of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who was assassinated by Cosa Nostra in Palermo during his term as President of the Region of Sicily.
