Yesterday we commemorated the 227th anniversary of the adoption of the Italian flag. At the constitutive congress convened in Reggio Emilia on 7 January 1797, Giuseppe Compagnoni, secretary general of the confederation, suggested the tricolor as the emblem of the Cispadane Republic. The tricolor was adopted by the Savoy, who added their coat of arms in the center of the white band, and was officially recognized with the establishment of the Republic in 1946. "Rooted in the stages of Italy's history, it has come down to the present day, as a symbol of the Homeland," said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a statement. "With Article 12, the Constitution acknowledges the Tricolor as the Flag of the Republic, our country's emblem. It identifies the sentiments of cohesion and national identity, as well as the values of freedom, democracy, social justice, and respect for human rights, that serve as the basis of our society and inspire the civil conscience in all of its manifestations. We are properly proud of the Tricolour, which represents a rich cultural and historical legacy. It recognizes citizens who are motivated to bring the values of the Constitution to life. Long live the Republic; long live the Tricolour", concluded the President.
