Maltese Archbishop Charles Scicluna believes that the Catholic Church should change its regulations and allow priests to marry. "Only the Pope", he noted, "has the last say on these issues". The prelate confirms to The Times of Malta in an interview that he has previously addressed the matter openly within the Vatican. The vow of celibacy "has been optional for the first millennium of the Church's existence and should become optional again", he said. "Some priests are secretly in romantic relationships; it's a worldwide phenomenon. We know that there are priests all over the world who also have children and I think there are also some in Malta who may have them."
