Local public transportation (buses and trams) is used by only 7.6% of Italians; too many people still travel by private vehicle, even in medium and large cities, due to the inadequacy of the bus and tram network and the low quality of the service provided, raising costs for many Italian families compared to the European average. Additionally, it is worth noting that the transportation industry contributes to over 25% of greenhouse gas emissions, including MP10 dust, by relying almost exclusively on fuel burned in petroleum. This is attributable not just to individual transportation, but also to freight transportation, which accounts for 55% via road, 30% by ship, and slightly less than 11% by rail. The automobile's dominance in the distribution of passenger transport is shown in Italy's rate of motorization, which places it first in Europe: 670 automobiles per 1,000 inhabitants, compared to 580 in Germany, 567 in France, and 560 for the European average.
