In 2023, 495.6 million were grossed at the Italian box office for 70.6 million theater admissions sold. Compared to 2022, this is a growth in box office and attendance of 61.6 percent and 58.6 percent, respectively. That's according to data from CINETEL, the subsidiary of the National Association of Cinema Exhibitors (ANEC) and ANICA Servizi, which handles the collection of box office and attendance in a sample of first-run movie theaters throughout Italy. According to the report, compared to the average for the 2017-2019 period, this is more generally a 16.3 percent drop in box office and a 23.2 percent drop in attendance. Overall, in its first year of return to post-pandemic normality, the period recovered more than thirty percentage points from the 2017-2019 average: as of December 31, 2022, the negative difference was 48.2 percent of receipts and 51.6 percent of admissions. On the rise was the box office share of Italian productions (including co-productions), which in 2023 accounted for 24.3% of receipts and 25.9% of admissions corresponding to 120.6 million in receipts (60.3 mln in 2022; +100%) and 18.2 million in admissions (9.4mln in 2022; +93.9%).
