During a wedding party in Pistoia, Tuscany, the floor of the hall of a former convent where guests were dancing collapsed: 35 people were injured, including five seriously, ending up on the lower floor where the refectory used to be. Among those injured was the married couple, both from Florence. The collapse occurred around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, the party had started at lunchtime and it is unclear exactly how many guests there were, local newspapers write between 100 and 150. "The fire department checked the entire structure, all the people have been rescued and identified, there is no missing person," said Pistoia Mayor Alessandro Tomasi, who arrived at the scene of the accident along with ambulances and other law enforcement agencies. "The collapse of a floor slab caused the fall of about 60 very young people who were dancing, a group from the Florentine”. The reason for the collapse is not yet known. The former convent known as Giaccherino is located just outside the city. It was built in the 15th century by a wealthy banker from Pistoia, Gabriello Panciatichi, and the Friars Minor (a movement of reformist Franciscans) settled there. In later centuries the convent expanded and became among the most important religious centers in Tuscany. Today it belongs to a private company, which hosts festivals and events.
