As of January 16, the city of Bologna has adopted a 30 km/h speed limit throughout the city with the exception of main roads. The measure was launched by the city council to prevent more or less serious accidents, but also to reduce CO2 emissions. The decision sparked a lot of controversy, not only from motorists who, in addition to being concerned about increased traffic congestion, see this kind of measure as a way to "cash in" with speed cameras and more frequent checks, but also from institutions, in particular, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. In a note, however, the ministry rejected the limit that has come into effect: "It does not appear to be a reasonable choice because the problems for citizens (especially workers) are likely to outweigh the benefits for road safety”. To solve the problem, the MIT says it is "ready to start an immediate confrontation with the Bologna administration to verify alternative solutions and prevent forcing and escaping that then risk being denied even by the courts, as already happened in Milan regarding the obligation for heavy vehicles of blind spot devices".
