An all-time record for electricity production from wind (23.4TWh) and photovoltaic (30.6TWh) sources was reached in Italy in 2023. This was noted by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity transmission grid. Considering all renewable sources, there were new activations of about 5.8 GW in 2023, which is about 2.7 GW higher than in 2022. However, during 2023, Italian electricity consumption decreased by 2.8 percent compared to 2022. Renewables covered a total of 36.8 percent of demand, up from 31 percent in 2022. The figure is up due to the positive contribution of all sources, including hydropower generation. Italy's electricity demand in 2023 was met 83.3 percent with domestic production and the remainder (16.7 percent) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries.
