Maps from the National Research Council show how the percentage of Italian territory affected by severe-extreme drought in the last 6 months (i.e., summer-autumn 2023) stands at 93 percent in Sicily, while in Calabria it reaches 85 percent. Another interesting data highlighted by the C.N.R. concerns the Italian population: considering the SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) at 6 months, the percentage of inhabitants living in territories affected by extreme drought reaches 12%, to which a similar percentage of citizens living in severe drought conditions should be added; thus, we can indicate in almost 15 million the number of people who, in different ways, since last summer are touched by a condition of water stress.
