Jannik Sinner is the new Australian Open champion. The Italian concludes a thrilling match in beauty by beating Russian Daniil Medvedev in the final with a score of 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-3 in 3 hours and 44 minutes of play. The 22-year-old from San Candido becomes the first Italian tennis player of any era to win the Melbourne Slam, the third to win a Major men's singles title after Nicola Pietrangeli (Roland Garros 1959 and 1960) and Adriano Panatta (Roland Garros 1976). A memorable feat by the world No. 4 ranked player, who even starts the last act of the tournament poorly. His opponent serves and responds better, is more incisive, and does not allow him to exploit his extraordinary qualities as he would like. The first two sets are deservedly Medvedev's. Then comes the turning point. Sinner picks him up again, increases intensity and decreases errors. A break at the end of the third set, a break at the end of the fourth one but the fifth one is decisive. At this point the Muscovite is tired, confidence is all on the side of the South Tyrolean. What determined the outcome of the match was Medvedev's lost serve in the sixth game. Sinner 'runs away' and there is nothing left to stop him. A very violent forehand on match point sentencing the Italian wins. "Congratulations to Daniil for the outstanding tournament he played” is Sinner's statement during the awards ceremony on the concrete of Rod Laver Arena. "I won a very important tournament, a special Slam. I thank my team and everyone who allowed me to reach this milestone. Sometimes it is not easy to work with me, but that is who I am. I am Jannik. I also thank the audience for making me feel at home. I wish everyone had parents like mine: they always allowed me to choose, never loaded me with pressure, even when I played other sports. I wish all children to have this freedom”.
