The navigation difficulties created by Yemeni Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea in 2023 jeopardized approximately 270 million deliveries of Made in Italy "pummarola" to Asia, including peeled tomatoes, pulps, purees, and tomato paste. This is the conclusion drawn from Coldiretti's examination of the economic consequences of pressures on maritime transit through the Suez Canal. This accounts for 10% of all Made in Italy processed tomato exports, according to Coldiretti. Due to recurrent terrorist attacks, sea routes between East and West have been lengthened in order to avoid the Suez Canal and reach the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia, resulting in dizzying rises in the cost of marine transit and journey durations. Container costs are rising, which is reflected in the product's competitiveness in overseas markets, with exponential rises affecting routes that are not directly engaged.
