The third season of the international research project Beyond EPICA - Oldest Ice, funded by the European Commission with 11 million euros and coordinated by the Polar Science Institute of the National Research Council (CNR), which aims to obtain data on temperature evolution, atmospheric composition and the carbon cycle, has been completed. The team worked day and night, reaching a depth of 1836.18 meters. In parallel with drilling activities, nearly 1367 m of ice cores were processed in the new science trench at Little Dome C this season. The goal of going back in time 1.5 million years to reconstruct past temperatures and greenhouse gas concentrations through analysis of an ice core extracted from the depths of the ice sheet becomes more real every year.
