Doni Day is back at the Uffizi Gallery. On Wednesday, January 31, couples in love who take part in the day-long event will enter the museum paying only one ticket, thus having free admission. Doni Day is the initiative organized starting in 2019 by the Uffizi to commemorate the wedding, celebrated in Florence in 1503, on January 31 itself, between Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi. These are two undisputed protagonists of the Uffizi collections: in their splendid portraits executed by Raphael, they turn their gaze to the observer, who is enchanted by the precious robes, the jewelry, and the relaxed and elegant pose of the two figures. Michelangelo's very famous Tondo Doni, depicting the Holy Family with St. John, bears their name precisely because it was commissioned from the artist on the occasion of the birth of their first-born daughter. Agnolo, a wealthy cloth merchant, and his wife, the aristocratic Maddalena, were avid art collectors and patrons of the leading artists of the day, such as Raphael and Michelangelo Buonarroti.
