Tax evasion "is an emergency comparable to terrorism," and in order to combat it, social media must be used, as it provides a snapshot of the lifestyle and standard of living of professionals and entrepreneurs. Maurizio Leo (Fratelli d'Italia), the Deputy Minister of the Economy and architect of the tax reform, expressed this view before a parliamentary committee. He stated, "We are currently engaged in data scraping, which entails analyzing the standard of living data shared by entrepreneurs and professionals on social media platforms." Words spoken by the deputy minister set off a chain reaction in politics. Armando Siri, director of the party's School of Political Training and economic policies adviser to Matteo Salvini, expressed "astonishment" as he spoke of "slogans that certainly warm the ideological hearts of those who have always mistook the just fight against tax evasion for an indiscriminate witch hunt" but, more importantly, "exceed the boundaries of the government program, which in fiscal and economic policy seeks to reduce the tax burden by achieving a 15% Flat Tax for all and simplify compliance".
