Every year, Istat evaluates the list of products that comprise the reference basket for the consumer price survey, while also revising the survey procedures and weights by which the individual products contribute to the measurement of inflation. The 2024 basket used to calculate the NIC (for the entire national population) and FOI (for blue-collar and white-collar families) indices contains 1,915 elementary products (1,885 in 2023), which are divided into 1,045 products, which are further divided into 425 aggregates. The HICP index (harmonised at the European level) is calculated using a basket of 1,936 elementary items (1,906 in 2023), divided into 1,064 products and 429 aggregates. Among the most typical goods of the evolution of domestic consumption that will join the 2024 basket are the Dehumidification and Air Purification Device, the Smart Light Bulb, and the All You Can Eat Meal. The hair straightener, electric shaver, electric underblanket, and several leisure and sports courses (tennis or padel, water aerobics, football, and five-a-side football) are examples of consolidated consumption. On the other hand, the E-book reader, the device for tracking essential functions, the electric hair clipper, and the electronic beard trimmer, all of which represent the lockdown period, leave the basket. Furthermore, the prices of some product aggregates, which were previously collected solely by Municipal Statistical Offices using traditional techniques, are now being recorded centrally, such as Car Insurance and Condominium Expenses, and others are broadening the range of product aggregates for which data scanner information is used. In this situation, beginning in 2024, the following two aggregates will be acquired from the integrated usage of the two sources: Preparations containing minced beef and dried, smoked, or salted fish and seafood.
