The train is the most sustainable means of transportation for 8 out of 10 Italians. The figure emerged from research by SWG, commissioned by Trenitalia, Italy's main passenger rail transport management company that is part of the holding company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane. Using the train does not only bring environmental benefits: the 45 million passengers who have chosen to travel on Trenitalia's Frecce trains have saved about 1 billion euros in costs to the community in terms of lower health care costs, damage to the environment, agriculture, real estate and biodiversity. For Stefano Cuzzilla, President of Trenitalia: "The train is the sustainable means of transportation par excellence: environmentally and socially conscious. Traveling by train means making a conscious choice, with a forward-looking vision. In the past year, more than 650 million passengers chose intermodality and traveled with the FS Group's Passenger Hub. Of these, about 470 million chose Trenitalia to get around. The numbers are positive and underscore the growing focus on green, integrated and intermodal mobility". Trenitalia represents in Italy a "driver" of sustainable development in the mobility sector. The lead company of the FS Group's Passenger Hub, in fact, has been working for some time now to put in place a series of concrete actions to make the Italian transport model increasingly sustainable: from the purchase of new trains designed to have a low environmental impact to efficiency enhancement with alternative rail and road traction systems, passing through the approximately 27,000 bicycle seats offered per day on trains, direct awareness raising to employees and passengers and the installation of photovoltaic systems on its workshops.
