The registrations in the Municipality of Milan of children of couples with two mothers are "illegitimate" and must be corrected. The Court of Appeal rendered this decision by granting the prosecutor's office its appeal regarding certain cases that surfaced a year ago in response to a circular from the Ministry of the Interior. A single stroke of the pen erases the name of the "intentional" mother, leaving just the biological one. The judges argue that a statute is required first because "the formation of a birth certificate indicating two people of the same sex as parents" is illegal in Italy. Lawyer Michele Giarratano, who is representing a couple involved, challenges the decision. "One of the two mothers," he claims, "has been wiped, and one parent has become a ghost. Italy appears to be regressing in terms of human rights. Through the lawyer, the two women say: "We are and remain a family," but are "disappointed" by a sentence "that arbitrarily decides who is a parent and who is not".
