According to Istat data released today, retail sales in value in 2023 were up 2.8 percent from 2022 and down 3.7 percent in volume. On average in 2023, the decline in volumes consumed compared to 2022 was 3.7 percent, although then inflation created the optical illusion of a 2.8 percent rise. Translating these figures into big money, compared to 2022 prices, food expenditures for an average family fell by 225 euros, non-food expenditures by 621 euros, for a total of 846 euros. As a result, a couple with two children purchased 314 euros less in food and 858 euros in non-food items, for a total of 1,172 euros, while for a couple with one child it was 284 euros less to eat, 1,081 euros in total.
