Yesterday, there was no inspection or visit from European Commission officials to Italy, just a quick technical consultation via videoconference. This is a long-planned event that has been held annually since 2020 (the date when this exercise was formed) as part of an activity involving all twenty-seven Member States without difference. This is what sources at Palazzo Chigi explained in response to some news that came in the press yesterday about the European Commission's work on the rule of law in Italy. "Similar meetings are held by the European Commission at this time of year in all member states," Palazzo Chigi insiders stated. "The themes under consideration are the same for everyone and include justice, the battle against corruption, media freedom, and the balance of powers. Today's talks between some European Commission officials and those of some Italian administrations are of short duration and aimed at updating the observations already highlighted by the Commission in its reports of previous years and, most recently, in 2023," the sources further explain, according to which yesterday's talks are absolutely normal and are aimed at the preparation by the European Commission of the 2024 report that will be published in the following months and it will have 27 chapters on the rule of law in each of the member states. As in all other fields, collaboration between Italy and the European Commission is progressing in a wholly good and constructive manner this year.
